Lesson 11: ICT as Platform for Change
Lesson 11: ICT as Platform for Change
Throughout the years, we have used ICT to accomplish the things that were deemed too hard to do in the past like long-distance communication, gaining updates from different parts of the world, making projects, etc. But the use of ICT is not limited to that only. We can also use ICT to bring change.
We can observe this use of ICT in the history of our country, the Philippines, when the people wanted change in the society. It was through the use of ICT that gave success to the events that made turning points in our history.
Historical Events
1. EDSA (People Power Revolution) - When the FIlipino people wanted to end the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos, The people used radio broadcasts to unite every sector. If it weren't for this form of ICT then the FIlipinos would not have been moved into action.
2. EDSA Dos - After the walkout of 11 prosecutors from the impeachment trial of former president Joseph Estrada, fueled by frustration, the people once again united in the streets of EDSA which was made possible because of text brigades.
3. Million People March - The people once again protested after funds that were allocated for the betterment of the country was misused for personal agendas. To promote the event the organizers used Facebook and Change.org to invite people to join the protest.
4. Yolanda People Finder - After typhoon Yolanda caused a catastrophic destruction in certain parts of Visayas, a lot of people have gone missing. In order to help the people searching for their loved ones, Google created a people finder database.
Change.org
It was because of this website that the Million People March was successful. Change.org is dubbed as the "world's platform for change" it allows anyone to propose a change by creating a petition. Looking for people to support and sign your petition is difficult. But through Change.org you can look for supporters or like-minded people to support your petition online.
Summary
ICT's purpose is not only to lessen our burdens but to also make a change. We can see in the history of the Philippines that it was because of ICT that we were able to make such big changes because it allowed people from far away places to unite as one and bring change for the future of the country. Now we can bring such changes with the use of websites like Change.org where you can make petitions asking for changes in the society, school, environment, etc. and gain supporters from anywhere around the world.
